This is the second mention I've seen recently of the Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I haven't read it, but thought the 1996 TV version was excellent https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tenant_of_Wildfell_Hall_(1996_TV_series) The acting doesn't seem to have won any awards, but here I am almost thirty years later remembering clearly the scenes when she returns to nurse the dying abusive husband. There is a quiet scene when he is preparing for post-death judgement. He clearly loved or at least admired her, and she is sympathetic to his worries. One can see that if he weren't abusive they might have been good together. I'm not explaining it well. I don't know if the scene is in the book.
