Also, I should credit "Mendelssohn and Victorian England" by Colin Timothy Eatock for alerting me to the existence of this fascinating book and for providing historical context for "Mendelssohn mania". Also thanks to the late Linda Shaver-Gleason, whose entertaining blog Not Another Music History Cliche is a great antidote to the sort of Great Man cliches one gets in Charles Auchester -- after reading it I looked up her Ph.D. thesis, which led me to Eatock's book.
