shards of wednesday books
Shards of Earth, Adrian Tchaikovsky. That sure was a space opera. Not my favorite Adrian Tchaikovsky, but hopefully he will deliver better payoff later in the trilogy.
A Conspiracy of Kings, Megan Whalen Turner. I think I liked this better on reread, knowing where it was going. Sophos is such an interesting character, both a sweetheart idealist and a coldblooded killer even from the start of the book. Most interesting moment I noticed this time around was Eddis reflecting that Sophos could have gotten the throne the hard way, and feeling bad about her role in Gen's manipulation of Sophos. I don't know if she's right (and it may have been the better choice for Sounis anyway), but that changes the message of the book for me from "sometimes solving political problems with violence/playing dirty is necessary" to "Gen steals Sophos/Sounis", which makes it less depressing to me. Also the thing where the high king in this series is a thief, who gets his throne by constantly stealing things he has no right to, is interesting..
