wednesday rabbit books
27 May 2020 23:30Watership Down, Richard Adams. Yay, epic rabbits! They sure have a lot of plot armor. I'm sure book club will have interesting things to say about the book. I feel like this is probably one of these books like Lord of the Rings where many of the best parts of the worldbuilding have been taken up by others. This is the sort of book that mostly doesn't pay attention to women characters. But I appreciated that it made it clear that the does weren't biologically less capable of fighting than the bucks -- just that the story was following genre conventions where the males are heroes and the females are in distress/refrigerators. I did also like the lack of toxic masculinity among the bucks -- that they were all valued independently of their ability to fight.
I feel like I ought to say something about this book other than the gender stuff -- it's more important that the characters aren't human. But it's bedtime.
