Sprained my wrist this weekend, so may not be able to write up as much as I'd like.
Moominland Midwinter, Tove Jansson. Group readaloud, which was a great idea and I'm so glad we did it.
Don't think I've reread it since I was a kid/teen. I think it might be my favorite Moomin book? Need to reread the Midsummer one. Moomintroll's emotional arc is well-done, and also the side characters who appear in the next-to-last chapter stick with me. Despite the English title (the original Swedish one was Trollwinter), the story actually starts slightly after the solstice and runs into early spring. But it was still a good choice to reread around midwinter -- a lot of solstice celebrations are about how the sun is going to come back, but this book is honest about how much we'll have to go through before spring. Also, Too-ticky is still the best:
“Quite, quite,” she thought with a little sigh. “It’s always like this in their adventures. To save and be saved. I wish somebody would write a story sometime about the people who warm up the heroes afterward.”
Rhythm of War, Brandon Sanderson. I finally finished this tome! It feels odd that there isn't more of it. Favorite bit definitely Navani: she's and older woman who get to do SCIENCE! The science is conceptually pretty neat, though may require some suspension of disbelief. Lots of stuff setting up for the next book, which will be interesting.
