La Tempête des Échos, Christelle Dabos. For those of you who haven't been following along, this is the fourth book of La Passe-Miroir (The Mirror Visitor), a YA fantasy series which has been getting press as "The French Harry Potter" but is really more like His Dark Materials meets Brandon Sanderson with more romance tropes and more/better female characters. Only the first two books are translated into English so far, but the series is now complete in French, and I've read it! Overall very recommended both as an immersive fantasy series with excellent worldbuilding and plenty of plot twists and as an entertaining way to practice French/gain vocabulary. (Also it motivated me to pack materials so I can knit a scarf on this trip, though said scarf will probably not come to life and nearly strangle me.)

Spoiler-free review: The series ending was generally satisfying if a little open ended. None of my pet theories panned out, though :-/ But plenty of excitement, and some nice Crowning Moments of Awesome. The cast of the first half of the series got somewhat short shrift here, which was a little disappointing since they're more fun on the whole than the characters introduced in book 3.

Disability, of various forms, is a major theme in the second half of the series, and I thought it was generally handled okay, though I do have some concerns. The unfortunately stereotyped East Asian-coded character from book 3 was not present in this book, excepting a mention of a doll who resembled her. Could have been worse :-/
