So, last year, because of a discussion about GoT, and because apparently no one else had collected this bit of morbid trivia before, I compiled a list of famous people whose mothers died shortly after their birth. It turned out to be shorter than I expected -- I hadn't realized just how trope-y "protagonist's mother dies giving birth to them" is. Wikipedia has a nice long list of women who died in childbirth, but most of them didn't die giving birth to anyone who lived to adulthood, let alone become famous (even if they had other famous children!).

I was reminded of this because [personal profile] swan_tower just posted about childbirth. This made me think that maybe I should go and update my list: but Wikipedia's list of women who died in childbirth has grown, and it seems I'd be adding another ten or so names to the list at least. However, I will note that my list is notably missing Jean-Jacques Rousseau as well as Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, father of Edward IV and Richard III.

Any other important names missing from this list?

Interesting! I suppose a lot of people whose mothers died in childbirth also died during or shortly after; I was an emergency Casearean and without modern medicine either my mum or I would definitely have died, and quite likely both.
