Children of Ruin, Adrian Tchaikovsky. Sequel to Children of Time, with added sentient animals of another phylum: so most of what I've read so far is the first section, setting up for this, which seems to involve teaching octopuses to play Carcassone and then literally everything going wrong at once. And then I read a little bit of the second section, bringing back our friendly species from book 1 -- was finding that a little bit less exciting, but had to put it aside because plane trip, on which I started:
The Spirit Ring, Lois McMaster Bujold. I'm glad online book club picked this, because this has been a fun adventure so far (I'm assuming, since this is Bujold, that everyone is not as doomed as they currently appear!) Unusual for Bujold in that it's set in actual Renaissance Italy (the specific locations are made up, but the worldbuilding is clearly Italy). Fiametta might be the closest thing to a female Miles Vorkosigan that Bujold has written -- starts out very much a teenage girl, wanting normal teenage girl things until stuff happens, strong-willed and passionate, though not in a position of enough privilege to do as much as she wants. Plot has various magical/necromantic hijinks, some more fun, some more horrifying. Not as deep as some other Bujold, but I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.
