Be the Serpent, Seanan McGuire -- well, that went places! Excited to see this series get into gear for what I'm guessing is the start of endgame. I was also thinking about how this series -- like its setting San Francisco, but in a different ways -- is gentrifying -- gone from being about stray changelings to being about the (new and old) power elites. And maybe now that we've established that killing adolescents is not cool, we can get rid of the Changeling's Choice for good?.
A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, T. Kingfisher. Book club book -- and I think it's a good choice for that, it's well done and has left me thinking. The basic gimmick: exciting action scenes with magically animated bread is fun -- but really the whole story is darker, not always in ways it considers. (Despite the title, the book takes the attitude that the best defense is a good offense.)
Because Internet, Gretchen McCulloch. This explains a lot about the linguistics and sociology of the internet, but is also just a good and fun example of popular writing (and you can tell that the author, as a linguist, is aware of what she's doing and the tricks she's using to make her writing more accessible). A pleasant read.
